Every January, Duke students line up for the mid-February Duke vs. University of North Carolina basketball game. Students are admitted to all basketball games free of charge, but on a first come, first served basis. As UNC is the arch rival of Duke, this game is very popular. Many years ago, students began sleeping in line the night before this big game. One year, someone set up a tent and the rest is history...
Duke set aside a green space, complete with WiFi access, for the yearly tenting and called it Krzyzewskiville, after Coach Krzyzewski, the beloved Men's basketball coach. Coach K, will often buy pizza for the tenters during their month-long stay. There are a ton of rules to tenting. For example, up to 12 people may be in a tent, and a certain number are required to be in each tent during random spot checks. Krzyzewskiville's capacity is 100 tents. If you don't get your tent up in time, there is a waiting list. If a group of tenters breaks a rule, a group from the waiting list takes their place.
